What is an Ankle Sprain?
Ankle sprains occur due to sudden stretching, causing a partial or complete tear of the ankle ligaments. It is initially very painful and can feel like it has popped. Injured blood vessels leak fluid into the tissue causing instant swelling over the area. How did I get this?
This happens often by walking on uneven surfaces or twisting your ankle during activity.
What can I do about it?
RICE technique- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
Try to reduce weight bearing force
What help can I get for this?
Podiatrists can assess the injury and advise on strapping or immobilisation techniques.
When injury is severe you may need to immobilise fully.
Orthopaedic surgery will be needed if a complete tear occurs.
When will it get better?
It may take longer to recover if the injury is severe. If minor people can recover in days.
